Draco Malfoy: The Department of Department Regulation

“The Department of Department Regulation” is a HP fanfic starring Draco Malfoy. It’s been written by Ayla Pascal.

In this story, Draco gets a job in a little-known department at the Ministry of Magic and is given the opportunity to investigate a case for which he cares very much.

This fic is evidence that a good mystery doesn’t have to be novel-length. Don’t get me wrong: I love novel-length mysteries, I really do. But who said that short stories don’t have a place in the mystery genre? Here Ayla conveys all the information the readers need to know while still keeping the fic concise.

Although the plot deals with serious topics, this gripping story isn’t dramatic. In fact, it even contains some amusing passages. Draco is in character, which means that his less politically correct side shows at some parts. He’s definitely not portrayed as a villain, but the author hasn’t made the mistake of turning him into an angel either.

Hermione Granger/Harry Potter: Life

“Life” is a HP fanfic starring Harry Potter and Hermione Granger. The author is Ayla Pascal.

This story deals with Harry’s decision to leave the wizarding world–his wife Hermione follows him–and the consequences of their moving to a Muggle village.

This is my favourite type of shippy fic: it falls midway between gen and het (you can replace “het” by “femmeslash” or “slash” and my statement will remain true, but given the pairing it’s obvious that this is a het fic). The story shows us how the characters are affected both as a couple and as individuals. Although Harry and Hermione’s relationship isn’t the happiest of all, you can rest assured that the author doesn’t indulge in melodramatic scenes nor over-the-top dialogues. Oh, and I love how the ending does justice to Hermione’s cleverness!

Hermione Granger: Mudblood Act

“Mudblood Act” is a Harry Potter fanfic starring Hermione Granger. The author is Ayla Pascal.

In this dystopian story, Voldemort has won the war and life becomes really hard for Mudbloods. The fic shows us this new, darker world through Hermione’s eyes.

I wouldn’t say this is a perfect story. The ending doesn’t give the readers a sense of completion. Besides, the fic contains the tired, unconvincing cliché “he raped me but I couldn’t help an orgasm.” With that being said, I urge you to read this fic if you are looking for a well-written, thoroughly believeable dystopia. The world, the laws, the society described by the author are all fascinating–in a sad, twisted way. The more you read about it, the more you want to know.

The characterisations are all perfect. And I’m glad that Narcissa wasn’t depicted as a villain, but as a rather sympathetic and almost friendly character instead–well, as sympathetic and friendly as the circumstances allowed her to be.

Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter: Necromancy, Necrophilia, and Nargles

“Necromancy, Necrophilia, and Nargles” is an HP fic featuring Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter. It’s been written by Ayla Pascal.

In this story, an empoverished Draco agrees to help Harry in an unusual project. Soon Malfoy finds out that he is going to need help as well.

Not-a-shipper alert: Considering the popularity of the pairing Draco/Harry (or Harry/Draco, I don’t care), I think a fair warning is in order here. I’m not a Drarry shipper. If you’re looking for the kind of review which reinforces the idea that these characters are cute/hot/perfect together, I’m sorry but you won’t find it here. And no, this fic hasn’t “converted me.” Ships aren’t a religion!

Now, onto the actual review:

This fic made me laugh out loud! There’s so much irony and wit in it. The dialogues are a delight to read.

The worldbuilding has been carefully done. I must highlight the potion brewing process, for it feels quite realistic.

Harry is by far the least interesting character in this fic. If he disappeared, I wouldn’t miss him at all. On the other hand, Draco is incredibly likeable here. It’s hard not to care and cheer for him–and this is saying something, as Draco belongs to my “least favourite HP characters” list. Pansy is amazing as well; I love her scenes with Draco. There are still other characters whose names I won’t mention because I want to avoid spoilers, but I can tell you that I loved their participation in this story!

Months ago I mentioned here that I’m not overly fond of drabbles. This statement was included in a rec for a drabble starring Snape and… Sprout. Talk about nice coincidences! Anyway, if there were more drabbles like “Immortal Beloved” out there, you’d see me flooding this blog with drabble recs. I won’t say more; just go and read this HP fic.

Hermione Granger/Severus Snape: Some Bind of Wonderful

“Some Bind of Wonderful” is a Harry Potter fanfic featuring Hermione Granger and Severus Snape. It’s been written by cathedral carver.

In this AU story, Hermione and Snape are in love with each other, but they just won’t touch. Until the day comes when she must set him free.

This was my first time reading this super popular pairing (in a complete fic anyway; I’d previously read an incomplete, not-ready-for-publication fic draft). I confess I would have liked to see more of their background story; after all, their relationship in canon is far from friendly, but here they’re already “head over heels in love with one another” when we first see them. Not that you should take my complaint too seriously in this particular case, for this fic is a pleasure to read.

I really like the way the author describes Severus and Hermione’s feelings, behaviour and habits. It was a great idea to have Snape’s (excessive, perhaps?) self-restraint work against him, and then also have it be the best thing that could happen to him and Hermione. By the way, I love it that she takes the lead and rescues him. Oh, and don’t let the low rating fool you: this fic contains BDSM! Well-written, cleverly done BDSM.

Rita Skeeter/Severus Snape: You Are Not Her

“You Are Not Her” is a Harry Potter fanfic featuring Rita Skeeter and Severus Snape. The author is featherxquill.

In this story, Rita seduces Snape. But she will not be exactly happy with the results.

Chances are this fic will make you fall in love with featherxquill‘s writing style. It’s sharp and sophisticated. The story is short, but this is not an issue: the author only needs a few sentences to tell us a lot about the characters and their relationship. Her characterisation of Rita is excellent.

Neville Longbottom, Bellatrix Lestrange: To Break a Good Man

“To Break a Good Man” is a Harry Potter dark fic starring Neville and Bellatrix. It’s been written by Ayla Pascal.

The story is set some years after the Battle of Hogwarts. Bellatrix is alive, and she manages to take Neville as her prisoner… or “pet,” as she once says.

This was my gift at the fanfic exchange The Secret Coconut. Thus, it’s been written with my tastes and requirements in mind. This obviously makes me even more inclined to rec it than I normally would. Besides, Ayla is one of the most talented ficwriters I know; browse this blog and you’ll see how often I rec her fics here.

But do you know what? As biased as this rec may seem, you’ll see that it’s a well-deserved one. The fic’s outstanding quality speaks for itself. It is dark, but not gratuitous nor untasteful. The author successfully puts the readers right there, inside the story; as you read it, you’ll feel just like Neville: there’s no way out, no hope, no future.

The characterisations are excellent. If you like Neville, you’ll agonise with him; if you’re a Bellatrix fan, you’ll love her sadism.

Other characters are mentioned in the course of the story. Chances are you’ll feel truly sorry for Ginny and Hermione. There’s a particularly disturbing passage about Alice. You’ll be left wondering whether that’s just a lie to make Neville feel even worse, or whether it’s possible that his mother has actually done what Bellatrix says she did.

Elvis Presley’s Magic is a Harry Potter fanfic written by sibyllevance.

This G-rated short story deals with a famous Muggle who isn’t really a Muggle.

The author says: “I had a bit too much fun with this.” As a reader, I can say I had a lot of fun with the fic too. It’s short, but sibyllevance does a good job in conveying all we need to know about the character’s life as a wizard in a few paragraphs. It hardly looks like a first fic, much less one written for a 30-minute challenge.

Narcissa Malfoy, Lucius Malfoy: Torn Lace

“Torn Lace” is a Harry Potter fanfic featuring Narcissa and Lucius Malfoy. It’s been written by lar-laughs.

In this story, Narcissa expects an apology from Lucius while she prepares herself for Draco’s third birthday party.

Despite the ship, I’d say this is really a gen fic. Romance is certainly not the focus here—and the fic is much better off without it. Lucius’ characterisation is spot-on, Draco’s first words are priceless (despite their intrinsic cruelty) and Narcissa’s tribulations and feelings are well written, making it hard not to sympathise with her.

Luna Lovegood: Dear Mother

“Dear Mother” is a Harry Potter ficlet starring Luna Lovegood. The author is rosehiptea.

In this fic, Luna writes a letter about her upcoming wedding to Rolf Scamander. The letter’s recipient? Her mother.

The author managed to write a sentimental yet saccharine-free ficlet. Luna’s characterisation is perfect. Her marriage to that name-only bloke is one the things I hate the most about interview!canon, but I decided to brush this issue aside this time. Although I still hate the idea, in this particular story it works.

Hermione Granger/Neville Longbottom: Surprisingly Well

“Surprisingly Well” is a lovely Harry Potter fanfic starring Hermione Granger and Neville Longbottom. It’s been written by darth_gojira.

What’s this story about? Well, the author wrote it as a response to the prompt fem dom, which really was one my requests at saying_yes_2010.

Now, think about a woman who smiles nonstop while reading a fic. That would be me! 🙂 I love Neville, I love Hermione, I love Neville/Hermione as a ship and fem dom is a major kink of mine. The fic has it all; of course I was more than prone to like it. But what made me really happy was that darth_gojira stuck to the “fem dom” prompt all the time, never deviating from it and always showing it in a positive light.

The author did a good job with the characterisations; both Hermione and Neville are easily recognisable. Besides, I liked the way darth_gojira worked several little details from HP canon into the story, making it all the more believable.

Lavender Brown/Cho Chang: Learning Curves

“Learning Curves” is a Harry Potter fanfic featuring Lavender and Cho. It’s been written by ragdoll.

What happens in this story? Lavender has been taking private tutoring sessions with Cho, because she wants to learn all about Quidditch to impress her dear Won Won. However, the particular tutoring session we see in this fic ends up including other topics.

Lavender is often taken for granted by Harry Potter fans—I freely admit I’m guilty of this myself. One of the best things about this story is the author’s ability to make us sympathise with her and try to view things from her perspective. This story made me want to read more (good) fics about (fleshed out) Lavender, and for this I’m deeply grateful to ragdoll. She also did a good job with Cho, portraying her as a seductive and confident girl instead of reducing her to a whiny weak character, like many ficwriters would do.

The sex scenes are most definitely hot! Don’t you like the ship Lavender/Cho? No problem; give this fic a try solely for the erotic scenes.

Even if dub-con is among your squicks (it’s certainly among mine), there are no reasons for you to avoid this story, despite its warnings. Trust me: there are no signs of violence, humiliation, blackmailing or borderline non-con in this fic.

Severus Snape/Minerva McGonagall: Threshold

“Threshold” is a Harry Potter ficlet featuring Minerva McGonagall and Severus Snape. The author is Kelly Chambliss.

This story deals with a certain Hogmanay routine that the characters develop over the years.

I have more than a soft spot for Minerva/Severus fics and this one is highly satisfying. You can feel the intimacy between the professors; it’s easy to see they understand each other. It takes Kelly only a few paragraphs to convey all we need to know about Severus and Minerva’s relationship, while keeping them strictly in character.

Hermione Granger/Poppy Pomfrey: Remedial Healing

“Remedial Healing” is a Harry Potter fanfic featuring Madam Pomfrey and Hermione Granger. It’s been written by Hijja.

In this story, Madam Pomfrey shows Hermione that witches have their own ways to deal with period cramps.

This is certainly not a perfect fic. There are some parts that don’t seem to belong in the story, such as the section about Susan Bones. And Pomfrey eventually does one thing that I found a bit untasteful (no spoilers this time), but that’s just me; maybe other readers will find it exciting. The fact that Hermione is still underage might scare some (many?) people away too.

If you ignore it all though, you may enjoy the fic for what it really is: a quite hot piece of HP femmeslash. As far as erotic scenes go, the author did a good job here.

Ginny Weasley, Luna Lovegood: The Attack of the Wrackspurts

“The Attack of the Wrackspurts” is a Harry Potter gen fic starring Ginny and Luna. The author’s name is yet to be revealed and will be posted here as soon as I find it out.

This story shows the beginning of the friendship between Ginny and Luna through the former’s eyes. It’s set during their first year at Hogwarts.

I have to admit I didn’t fall in love with this fic at first sight/read. I had to reread some passages to finally realise that yes, this is well worth a rec. Both Luna and Ginny are in character—as well as Molly Weasley, seen in a cameo. It was very clever of the author to connect Luna’s beliefs to Ginny’s issues with Tom Riddle; as you’ll see, the fic’s title makes a lot of sense.

Alice Longbottom: Futile

“Futile” is a Harry Potter ficlet starring Alice Longbottom. The fic’s author is Kehlen Crow.

In this story, we see some glimpses of Alice’s chaotic thoughts and sensations.

The fic is credible; it makes you feel as if you’re inside Alice’s mind while she struggles to find some sense in the world around her. The author cleverly uses Neville’s visits to his mother as a device to show us the passage of time.

Charlie Weasley/Nymphadora Tonks: Squeezing Something In Before the Holidays

“Squeezing Something In Before the Holidays” is a HP het fic starring Charlie Weasley and Tonks. It’s been written by florahart.

This is pure PWP fun. Charlie and Tonks have sex in an empty classroom and make plans for more encounters.

I can’t believe I had never recommended any fics about Tonks before! I like her so much! Especially when ficwriters portray her like the author of this story did: bold, charming and fun. It’s not that Charlie isn’t an interesting character in his own right, but this fic wouldn’t be nearly as good as it is if his partner wasn’t my dear Nymphadora.

Only one complaint: the couple’s plans for the next day made me so curious that now I want to kill florahart for not having described the execution of said plans. 😛

Neville Longbottom: At Peace

“At Peace” is a Harry Potter fanfic starring Neville Longbottom. It’s been written by angela_snape.

In a few words, the author tells a poignant story about Neville and his loved ones. It’s worth noting that a single sentence is enough for angela_snape to show us that the youngest Longbottom has made some progress, but still retains part of his old traits. This is how a good drabble is supposed to be like.

Narcissa Malfoy, Bellatrix Lestrange: Silene Noctiflora

“Silene Noctiflora” is a Harry Potter fanfic starring Narcissa (not yet Malfoy) and Bellatrix (not yet Lestrange). It’s been written by Diabólica.

This story is told from eight-year-old Narcissa Black’s POV. She finds herself helping Bellatrix put a questionable plan into practice.

Most dark fics out there are mere exercises in exhibitionism (“Should it be dark? Then I’ll have this male character rape her, vomit on her, pee on her and everyone will sympathyse with him and think this fic is super dark, and I’ll look like a fanfiction superstar!”). Not this one; it’s a genuinely dark story. Yes, it does contain violence—hence the rating—but the author clearly didn’t write it just because she could. Most importantly: unlike many dark fic writers, Diabólica does *not* try to induce us readers to view the characers’ twisted actions as somewhat justifiable. Their misdeeds are what they are.

The fic is very well-written. I love little Narcissa’s voice. The plot and the characters are entirely believable; except for the magic, this could be a real story about real people and their real cruelty.

In this story, Molly goes to a party hosted at the Malfoy Manor, only to find herself embarrassed.

I’m reccing this fic because it’s so easy to relate to Molly’s feelings. When I saw how Narcissa found a way to prolong Molly’s torture, I couldn’t help but think: “Urgh! Oh, no!”

Luna Lovegood: Greeting the Moon

“Greeting the Moon” is a Harry Potter fanfic starring Luna Lovegood and a mystery lover. The author is kabal42.

This story reveals some of Luna’s rituals and how they connect with her love/sex life. It’s told from her lover’s POV.

Luna is perfectly in character here: adorable, fascinating and eccentric. 🙂

The best word I can use to define the fic’s atmosphere is “gentle.” Luna and her partner obviously live a peaceful life. No matter if they’re making love or decorating a Christmas tree, you can tell they’re happy together.

Argus Filch: Leporiphobia

“Leporiphobia” is a Harry Potter fanfic starring Argus Filch (and many, many bunnies :P). The fic’s author is Ayla Pascal, aka curia_regis.

In this story, we find out that Filch is very afraid of rabbits. Much to his distress, Hogwarts receives a huge crowd of leporine visitors.

If you aren’t into crack!fic you may skip this one, although I think you shouldn’t. Not if you don’t want to miss a hilarious story. The whole idea is so creative! And the bunnies, of course, are so cute!
