Lavender Brown/Cho Chang: Learning Curves

January 9, 2010 Leave a comment

“Learning Curves” is a Harry Potter fanfic featuring Lavender and Cho. It’s been written by ragdoll.

What happens in this story? Lavender has been taking private tutoring sessions with Cho, because she wants to learn all about Quidditch to impress her dear Won Won. However, the particular tutoring session we see in this fic ends up including other topics.

Lavender is often taken for granted by Harry Potter fans—I freely admit I’m guilty of this myself. One of the best things about this story is the author’s ability to make us sympathise with her and try to view things from her perspective. This story made me want to read more (good) fics about (fleshed out) Lavender, and for this I’m deeply grateful to ragdoll. She also did a good job with Cho, portraying her as a seductive and confident girl instead of reducing her to a whiny weak character, like many ficwriters would do.

The sex scenes are most definitely hot! Don’t you like the ship Lavender/Cho? No problem; give this fic a try solely for the erotic scenes.

Even if dub-con is among your squicks (it’s certainly among mine), there are no reasons for you to avoid this story, despite its warnings. Trust me: there are no signs of violence, humiliation, blackmailing or borderline non-con in this fic.

Hermione Granger/Poppy Pomfrey: Remedial Healing

January 2, 2010 Leave a comment

“Remedial Healing” is a Harry Potter fanfic featuring Madam Pomfrey and Hermione Granger. It’s been written by Hijja.

In this story, Madam Pomfrey shows Hermione that witches have their own ways to deal with period cramps.

This is certainly not a perfect fic. There are some parts that don’t seem to belong in the story, such as the section about Susan Bones. And Pomfrey eventually does one thing that I found a bit untasteful (no spoilers this time), but that’s just me; maybe other readers will find it exciting. The fact that Hermione is still underage might scare some (many?) people away too.

If you ignore it all though, you may enjoy the fic for what it really is: a quite hot piece of HP femmeslash. As far as erotic scenes go, the author did a good job here.

The Black Sisters: Always: A Fugue for Three Sisters

December 19, 2009 Leave a comment

“Always: A Fugue for Three Sisters” is a Harry Potter femslash fanfic about the Black sisters: Bellatrix, Narcissa and Andromeda. The author is noeon.

If you dislike incest, you’d better stay away from this fanfic. Anyway, it should be noted that this story features not only erotic moments, but also family drama.

The scenes between Bellatrix and Narcissa are very hot. The author added some voyeurism to the mix, making the scenes even stronger. The initial and the final sections focus on family issues, and in both cases noeon did very well too, proving that you don’t need to be wordy to explain the situation your characters are in.

Ginny Weasley/Pansy Parkinson: Maiden Voyage

“Maiden Voyage” is a Harry Potter ficlet starring Ginny Weasley and Pansy parkinson. The author is tania_sings.

In this fic, Ginny feels the inconvenient effects of the Patented Daydreams, much to her embarrassment—and to Pansy’s amusement, it seems.

A nice quick read if you want some humourous femmeslash. It’s also a painless introduction to the Pansy/Ginny ship, in case you aren’t used to seeing these characters in such a context.

Minerva McGonagall/Rita Skeeter: Truth Beyond

“Truth Beyond” is a Harry Potter fanfic starring Minerva McGonagall and Rita Skeeter. It’s been written by Kelly Chambliss.

This fic reveals a hidden world inside the Wizarding World; we get to know it through the eyes of both Minerva and Rita.

It’s a most enthralling story. It reads much like an invitation to a secret club, and of course, once you get in you can’t stop until you’ve fully explored every single bit of it.

The characterisations are entirely convincing. You’ll never have a doubt you’re reading a story about McGonagall and Skeeter.

There are a few OFCs (original female characters) in this fic. Fortunately, they aren’t there to overshadow the canonical ladies, but rather to serve the plot’s purposes, as it should always be. More power to Kelly for that.

Minerva McGonagall/Rolanda Hooch: At Arm’s Length

“At Arm’s Length” is a Harry Potter femmeslash fanfic featuring Madam Hooch and Minerva McGonagall. The author is miss_morland.

This story is set during Snape’s year as Headmaster of Hogwarts. Hooch is disgusted over the school’s situation, but she finds some peace as she spends the Christmas in McGonagall’s company.

It’s a very well-written story. I’ve never cared too much for Madam Hooch, but with this fic the author almost turned me into a fan of hers, for her portrayal made her quite likeable. The erotic moments are great and the author cleverly took advantage of such scenes to keep Minerva in character.

Hermione Granger/Pansy Parkinson: Coming Events Cast Their Shadow Before

“Coming Events Cast Their Shadow Before” is a Harry Potter femslash fanfics featuring Hermione and Pansy. The author remains anonymous for the time being; as soon his/her name is revealed, this post will be updated.

Updated on January 8th, 2009: Much to my delight, it turns out the story’s been written by Ayla Pascal, whose fics I can never cease to recommend. Not even when I have no idea she’s their author!

This story follows Hermione’s love (?) story with Ron across the years, plus something else.

The fic’s style resembles that of fairy tales, which makes for a quite pleasing experience. The characterisations are totally realistic, giving you the feeling that you’re reading a true story, rather than a fictional piece. And the ending is just so … well, I’ll save the thought to myself, as I don’t want to post spoilers here. 😉

Minerva McGonagall/Hermione Granger: Yes, Professor

December 7, 2009 Leave a comment

“Yes, Professor” is a Harry Potter femmeslash, PWP fanfic written by Aisha. It features the pairing Minerva McGonagall/Hermione Granger.

This isn’t a brilliant fanfic, nor is it particularly original. Plus, it deals with a (former) teacher/(former) student relationship of an erotic nature, a theme many readers object to. To tell you the truth, I myself used to strongly object to such stories … before I joined the Harry Potter fandom anyway. I still do object to teacher/student erotic relationships in my primary fandom, Saint Seiya, and my objections would probably apply to many other fandoms as well. But this is a Harry Potter fan blog after all. And I do tolerate that controversial topic in HP fanfiction, as long as it doesn’t make me feel disturbed.

As I see it, this Hermione/McGonagall fanfic isn’t disturbing at all. We just get to see the characters engage in a sensual roleplay. There’s not much background info on their relationship and it really doesn’t matter much in this case.

Minerva and Hermione’s sudden love confessions seem somewhat awkward amidst the story; their words look unnatural. You can almost sense the characters thinking something like “oh, we have to say we love each other so the readers won’t think we’re just two dirty witches.”

Luckily, these quick distractions don’t really spoil the fun. This fanfic is a nice read, especially for those into dominant!McGonagall. 🙂

Hermione Granger/Luna Lovegood: Virgin State of Mind

“Virgin State of Mind” is a Harry Potter femmeslash fanfic starring Hermione Granger and Luna Lovegood. It’s been written by purelush.

If you don’t like reading about virgin!Hermione, you may want to avoid this fanfic, but know you’d miss a quite cool story. I’m not overly fond of virgin!Hermione myself, and yet I had lots of fun with this fic.

The only downside to it is the way the author explains Hermione’s sexual orientation. The character realises she’s a lesbian, but she does so too quickly and in an excessively simple manner. A few additional sentences might have fixed the problem and made the whole oh-Hermione-is-really-a-lesbian issue much more realistic.

If you couldn’t care less for character development and just want to know about the fanfic’s hot parts, be happy: this story won’t disappoint you at all. 😉 Luna and Hermione’s scenes are delightful.

This fanfic is also very funny. Luna’s explanations and announcements are all didactic, as if she was a teacher (and in a way, she certainly is). Didactic moments often make a story look awkward or plain boring, but the author doesn’t fall into this trap. In fact, she successfully uses Luna’s “lessons” to enhance the fic’s fun atmosphere.

Alice Longbottom/Amelia Bones: Like Water on the Moon

December 6, 2009 Leave a comment

“Like Water on the Moon” is a femmeslash Harry Potter fanfic about Alice Longbottom and Amelia Bones. It’s been written by magnetic pole, who’s already had another Harry Potter fanfic recommended here.

Alastor Moody also plays a prominent (slashy) role in this story, even if only in the girls’ fantasies. Yes, this is mainly a fanfic about dreams, imagination and romantic plans for the future.

Alice hasn’t married Frank yet, hence she still doesn’t carry the Longbottom name (read the comments for more info on the author’s personal canon for Alice). Amelia is her classmate, the two of them are in love and they fantasise about Moody’s private life while they wait for his class to finish.

Give this short story a chance even if you, like me, tend to dislike fluffy fanfiction. It’s so pleasing to the eyes, and it contains so many interesting possibilities (magnetic pole should definitely write a follow-up), that it’ll make you want more.

Minerva McGonagall/Augusta Longbottom: A Toast to Lord Voldemort

December 2, 2009 3 comments

“A Toast to Lord Voldemort” is a femslash Harry Potter fanfic written by magnetic_pole, rated PG. The main characters are Neville Longbottom, his grandmother Augusta and now retired professor Minerva McGonagall.

Neville finds out his gran and his former Transfiguration teacher took advantage of the new, more flexible times to do something they’d ever wanted to do. The story shows how he reacts to the news. It also reveals Minerva and Augusta’s common past, plus their feelings and thoughts on various topics, such as society and politics.

Why do I recommend this story? Before I go on, let me tell you that this was the very first Harry Potter fanfic I ever read. After finishing all the books a few weeks ago, I started collecting and saving links to fanfics. Several hours ago I stumbled upon IJ community hp_beholder, fell in love with its concept and finally found this fanfic over there. I decided then that it had to be “my first one,” because I love Neville and McGonagall dearly, have a soft spot for Augusta, am a femmeslash supporter and the reviews left by the fic’s readers caused me a much favourable impression. So I returned to the community about one hour ago, read the whole fanfic, enjoyed it immensely … and here I am, writing this fanfic recommendation.

The characterisations in this story are just about perfect, as well as the dialogues and the overall atmosphere. This fanfic will make you laugh and will give you a warm feeling too. Speaking of feelings, it must be noted that the author is skilled enough to write about love without making her story look unrealistic, annoying or plain cloying. Moreover, this isn’t just about the so-called romantic love; it’s about family too. In fact, this aspect is quite relevant to the story.

Minerva and Augusta are their usual flinty selves. They’re a lovely–in a rather weird, tough manner–couple. Their dialogues make you think about how things might have been and how they can actually be now that the two of them got to do what they had always wanted. Despite some rather sad memories and frustrations, they don’t sound sour at all. Augusta Longbottom is rarely seen in the books, so it’s great that magnetic_pole let her shine. McGonagall is wonderfully in character, and I read each of her lines eagerly, never getting disppointed in the process.

Neville is shy, awkward, loving and understanding. He’s clever enough to see exactly how he’s supposed to behave if he doesn’t want to get into trouble with his all-mighty gran. The fact that he isn’t presented as a “macho” or something like that makes him all the more adorable. Fortunately, the author didn’t try to distort the character’s personality to make him fit into the “normal” behavioural standards for young men–a mistake I’m afraid many writers would have made if they were in magnetic_pole‘s place. At least, this is what many ficwriters outside the Harry Potter fandom tend to do to sweet male characters like Neville: they follow a sexist path that destroys most or all of the positive things about the guys they portray. I’m truly grateful to magnetic_pole, for she portrayed Neville as he is, and never sounded as if she had to apologise for this. She doesn’t have to, anyway.

In conclusion, I’m happy that this was my very first experience as a Harry Potter fanfiction reader–and recommender. Then again, that should be obvious enough by now. *smiles*
